Special Job Hiring Website
There are so many jobs available that the Census Department, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has put up a special job hiring website.
Jobs are available in four major categories:
- Headquarters and National Processing Centers
- 2010 Census Takers
- Regional Office Employment
- Student and Research Opportunities
Headquarters and NPC Jobs
These jobs are for statisticians, analysts, mathematical statisticians, information specialists, geographers and cartographers. Specific job summaries for each are available online, as are lists of qualifications and application information.
The Census Bureau headquarters is in Suitland, Maryland, just outside the District of Columbia. The National Processing Center is located in Jefferson, Indiana and the NPC has two call centers- at Hagerstown, Maryland and Tucson, Arizona.
2010 Census Takers
Many jobs available for 2009 field operations have been filled, but additional hiring will be done both in the fall of 2009 and the spring of 2010. Applicants are urged to contact the regional center closest to their home. There is a special need for bilingual census takers, with a demand for people who speak both Spanish and English.
These jobs are for updating address lists and conducting interviews with community residents. Census takers receive free training, have flexible work hours, are paid weekly and are reimbursed for authorized mileage and related expenses.
Regional centers are located in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Seattle.
Regional Office Employment
Regional office personnel are responsible for hiring and supervising the field workers that collect census data in every state. Some regional office workers have regular employment conducting surveys. These offices also employ payroll staff, geographers and other staff members.
Full time Census Bureau employees receive a variety of federal health and retirement benefits and are paid according to a federal pay scale that is competitive with pay outside the government.
Student and Research Opportunities
These jobs are available at a variety of levels and time periods. They include temporary student employment, a student career experience program, a Presidential Management Fellows Program and a postdoctoral research program.
Census results help determine representation in government, as well as how federal funds are spent in local communities on such things as roads, parks, housing, schools, and public safety.
The census has been taken every 10 years since 1790.
