The immigrant Edward Bompasse is the progenitor of most of the Bompasse family in America. The surname has undergone several spelling and pronunciation changes. Some of the alternate spellings are Bumpus, Bumpas, Bumpers, Bumps and Bump.
Edward Bompasse the Immigrant
Edward was unmarried on arrival and also single at the 1623 division of land. He was probably one of the " lusty yonge men " aboard The Fortune. [The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, by Charles Edward Banks; Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc, 1980, p. 110]
Edward Bompasse and his wife, Hannah, raised a family of at least eight children at Duxbury and Marshfield, MA. He was also one of the original proprietors of Rochester, MA. Edward died at Marshfield in 1693. The following line of descent is through his son John.

- John Bumpus was born in 1636 at Marshfield, MA, the son of Edward and Hannah Bumpus/Bompasse, and died in 1716 in Rochester, MA. He and his wife, the former Sarah Hunter, had 10 children.
- Edward Bump married Martha Raymond in 1718. He was born in 1688 at Rochester, MA, and died in 1745. They had nine children and lived at Rochester and Wareham, MA.
- James Bump married Jedidah Lothrop. He was born in 1727 and died in 1804 at West Salisbury, VT. They had five children and also lived at Amenia, NY.
- Salathiel Bump married 1) Mary Strong and 2) Lovisa Tinkham. He was born in 1760 and died in 1842 at Salisbury, VT. He had 13 children. This line of descent is through his second wife.
- Samantha Bump was born in 1810 and in 1839 married Harvey Boardman. They had five children and lived in East Middlebury, VT.
- Caroline M. Boardman (1840-1934) married in 1865 as his second wife David Bosworth. They lived in Bristol, VT. She was the mother of five children.
- David R. Bosworth (1877-1932) of Bristol, VT, married Anna Greene Nichols (1876-1971) in 1901. They lived at Bristol and had two children. Anna was the daughter of William Henry Nichols of Braintree, MA and Randolph, VT, and his wife, the former Ann Eliza Bates. She is a descendant of the Clement Bates (1595-1671) who came from England in 1635 and settled at Hingham, MA. The line is: Ann-8, William A.-7, Michael-6, Joseph-5, Isaac-4, Joshua-3, Joseph-2, Clement-1.
- Bernard B. Bosworth was born in 1905 and in 1929 married Pauline Sullivan, to whom he had four children. They lived at Bristol, Burlington and Colchester, VT.
